New Toys for Christmas

The Christmas social and work commitments have been getting in the road of my HT Construction of late, but this has been rectified with a vengeance in the last week, thanks to the arrival of 3 significant new toys;
  • Infrant ReadyNAS NV+ with 2 TerraBytes of glorious RAID5 goodness
  • Sonos Music System ZP80 Bundle
  • Toshiba HD-A1 HD DVD player
The first two items represent a shift for me, away from striving for perfection in audio, and more towards flexibility and fitting in with my lifestyle. Consequently, the Musical Fidelity A5 Integrated 2-channel amp was sold off to finance these two items.... and I have no regrets.

The Elektra Theatron 7 channel amp, whilst not quite the equal of the MF A5 is very close, and I couldn't justify holding onto it for the rare moments when I can do some 'critical listening'.

Look out for individual reports on each of these 3 items over the next few days, as they are all very impressive performers.

Where did you manage to score an HD-A1??? They aren't due for Australia at all... I'm thinking you got a good deal on it cos I remember you saying that DVD was good enough for you.

Apparently A2 is more user friendly, but no Analog output which is a deal killer.

Khang, the HD-A1 was imported from the US. Cost was US$385 + US$40 shipping.

It only plays R1 SD DVDs, but is region free for HD DVDs. Luckily I have the Oppo and the VP30 for playing SD DVDs if I can be bothered with their lower quality from now on. ;P

Yes, the A2 has much faster load times, but the lack of 5ch analog out was a deal breaker as I would have needed to upgrade the AVR to one that could decode HDMI audio... which would have added another $2k. :(

The fans on the Netgear switch are getting 'the snip' this weekend. I'm going to split the voltage from one of the fans, which should halve the speed.

I think it could even run without any fans at all as it doesn't produce much heat at all.

mate.. congrats the SAN is finally in place... and you too have downgraded from 'real audio' to 'working audio' .... since I bought my first iPod.. I knew it would be downhill from there because its so convenient having all your music in a HDD, playlists, etc... I haven't played a real CD for a long, long time....

let you know when the toppy HD arrives for a play date..

merry Xmas!!!!
