Be gone evil HDCP

Great news in the last week....

A firmware hack is now available for my Oppo DV-970HD DVD player to remove HDCP encryption on the upscaled output formats. I think that this is the thin end of the wedge and it won't be long before these HDCP firmware hacks are just as common as the ones to remove disc region coding.

It's great to have the option of removing HDCP as it is often problematic due to different interpretations of the standard between various manufacturers, and the only loser in the end is the consumer.

Heres a link to an ISO file of it.

I was lucky I was able to rid HDCP from my Samsung HD950 as well using a "hack" I got from the 'net. It actually did more than just rid HDCP. It allowed all discs from all zones to be played, allowed upconversion over component as well HDMI...

Thanks for the link! Have any other hacks been released that are based on more recent versions of the firmware or does this hack work "on top of" factory firmware? (ie, first install latest Oppo firmware THEN install the hack to enable the component upscaling). I was an early adopter to HDTV in 2000 and my set only has component inputs... :(

Hi Anonymous. Unfortunately, the hacked firmware is an image that completely replaces the existing one, and I haven't yet seen a version of it based on the more recent firmware releases.

I've had a look at the new formware releases though, and there aren't any new features that I must have. Most are related to SACD which I don't use the Oppo for.
